Why “Reporting from Night”? The title connects to the time when Kateri usually writes — at night, in fragments, sometimes in a fog — and the sleep deprivation experienced by parents of young children. It has a provocative, sexy side, alluding to her time as a downtown girl prowling clubs, galleries and parties and how she remembers that now. As in the downtown streets at night, there’s a dark, hallucinatory feel. Yet there’s also the lightness and invention of a child’s-eye view. Mix those elements and you get imagistic poems that play at the edges of eroticism, exploring the tensions and pleasures of the natural world growing within the city, by day and night.
